Pet store merch

Eye-catchy merchandising is one of the basics of a successful retail business. Attractive products display draw customer attention and increase sales. Not only fashion-retailers and grocery owners have recognized the importance of visual goods display. Merchandising is vital to drive sales in any business.

Let’s have a look at the main principles of pet shop merchandising:

1. Group your products by their features

The customer can be easily guided through your store shelves if the products are displayed by categories or brands, vertically or horizontally. Retail experience has shown that vertical merchandising is more effective. For example, you can have divide your  store space into several blocks, each block representing a particular category of goods:

  • nutriments (always plan sub-categories for each pet type);
  • accessories;
  • veterinary drugs;
  • medicated nutriments.

And do not forget to group products by brands within each block and each category.

2. Remember, market share equals to shelf share

Give best-selling products and market leaders the best visibility, display them on the top spots. Effective visual display is a mixture of sales, turnover and profit analytics, which can be calculated with the help of intelligent merchandising software.

3. Use a triangle merchandising principle

A proven technique each retailer must know. Put simply, “triangle” principle means placing the main product - a pet nutriment, for example, at the store center, meaning the customer has to walk through the store space to get it. While walking through the store, the customer’s attention is caught by smaller items on the outside, for example, tiny pet toys etc. If implemented effectively, this simple rule can boost sales and draw customer focus.

4. Highlight the front side of your goods

Never put the back side of your products on the shelf front, avoid messy, damaged or badly placed goods, which can look unattractive. Always ensure the shelf space is not cluttered.

5. Update your displays regularly

Update your displays and shelves frequently, at least twice per year, or ideally once per quarter.

Implement seasonal changes. When the weather is warm in spring, put anti-flea and anti-tick aids to the front. In summer people usually travel out of town with their pets, so we recommend you to showcase pet baskets and skippers. September to January is an ideal time to place warm pet clothing on the best store spots.

Remember, the more you analyze customer behavior, the better your merchandising works and the higher profits you make. Ask your store managers to observe and track the way customers behave in your store.

Customer is the best merchandiser.  Transform your creativity into tangible performance results with the help of intelligent merchandising software solutions.
